A note on sources
Every attempt to open olympics.com for this research timed out. The 2026 programme below is therefore FIS's own list, published on the first day of competition, and statements attributed to the IOC come from search-result summaries or named press reports, and are marked as such. Results are not on this page; they are on Milano Cortina 2026 and the 2026 Paralympics.
Milano Cortina 2026 (finished)
FIS dates competition day 1 to Saturday 7 February 2026, the day after the opening ceremony, and its daily reports run to events on 22 February 2026, which IOC pages seen only in search summaries give as the closing day. FIS counted 57 ski and snowboard Olympic medal events, and ski mountaineering, governed by the ISMF, added three more.
| Discipline | Medal events, 2026 | Events as FIS listed them |
|---|---|---|
| Alpine skiing | 10 | Downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom and team combined, five each for women and men |
| Freestyle and freeski | 15 (7 men's, 7 women's, 1 mixed) | Moguls, dual moguls, aerials, mixed team aerials, big air, slopestyle, ski cross, halfpipe |
| Cross-country | 12 (6 per gender) | Sprint classic, 10 km interval start, skiathlon, team sprint free, 4 x 7.5 km relay, 50 km mass start classic |
| Snowboard | 11 (5 men's, 5 women's, 1 mixed) | Big air, slopestyle, parallel giant slalom, snowboard cross, mixed team snowboard cross, halfpipe |
| Ski jumping | 6 | Normal hill individual (women and men), women's large hill, men's large hill individual, mixed team, men's super team |
| Nordic combined | 3, men only | Individual Gundersen normal hill 10 km, individual Gundersen large hill 10 km, team sprint |
| Ski mountaineering (ISMF) | 3 | Men's sprint, women's sprint, mixed relay (per NBC Olympics) |
What was new
FIS named five innovations in its disciplines: the team combined in alpine skiing, equal race distances for women and men in cross-country, dual moguls in freestyle, and a women's large hill and a men's super team in ski jumping. Ski mountaineering was making its Olympic debut, which NBC Sports, in a search summary, attributes to the rule letting a host propose sports for its own Games.
What the summaries say about the IOC's decisions
The IOC's own pages could not be read, so each item here is unconfirmed:
- A search summary of the IOC's 2022 release says the Executive Board approved the 2026 event programme in June 2022, with women at 47% of athletes and 50 women's events, both Winter Games records at the time, and alpine combined approved only provisionally.
- The same summary describes five ski mountaineering events and a quota of 48 athletes, while the Games held three; how that changed was not traced. This is a disagreement between the 2022 plan and what happened.
- NBC Sports and an Italian outlet give 116 medal events across all sports, a record; the Italian outlet splits them into 54 men's, 50 women's and 12 mixed.
- A press report says the alpine team parallel was dropped because the men's and women's alpine venues were too far apart.
The 2026 Paralympic Winter Games (finished)
The IPC gives the Paralympic Winter Games as 6 to 15 March 2026. FIS ran three of the six Paralympic sports, Para alpine, Para cross-country and Para snowboard, with 30, 20 and 8 medal events, about 80% of all Paralympic medals by FIS's count. FIS says these were the first Paralympic Games since it took over those disciplines from the IPC, a transfer effective July 2022.
FIS gave two different participation figures: before the Games it said a record 54 countries would take part in Para snow sports (5 March 2026), and its review afterwards gives 53 national ski associations (23 March 2026). The rules and classes are on adaptive and Para skiing.
French Alps 2030 (upcoming)
The award
The International Luge Federation (FIL) reported that the 142nd IOC Session in Paris (22 to 24 July 2024) elected the French Alps to host the 2030 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, on condition that the French government's guarantee be supplied by IOC deadlines: to the Prime Minister by 1 October 2024 and ratified by the French Parliament by 1 March 2025. Whether those deadlines were met was not checked for this site. The Canadian Olympic Committee says the vote, on 24 July 2024, was 84 to 4, and gives the Olympic dates as 1 to 17 February 2030. The Paralympic dates were not found.
The programme, as reported
The Sports Examiner, in a report dated 7 July 2026 relaying the IOC Executive Board's 2030 programme decision, records these changes in the ski and snowboard sports:
- Freeride added as a discipline, with four events: women's and men's ski and snowboard.
- Added: a freestyle ski cross mixed team event, a snowboard mixed team parallel event, a women's ski jumping super team and a biathlon mixed singles team event.
- Removed: Nordic combined.
- Totals, unconfirmed against the IOC release: 126 events across all sports (56 women's, 55 men's, 15 mixed) and about 3,046 athletes.
The IOC's headline, seen in a search result, calls Alpes 2030 the first gender-equal Olympic Winter Games, with freeride ski and snowboard athletes to debut. A search summary of the IOC page and the same press report say snowboard parallel giant slalom is kept; the IOC had put off decisions on it and on Nordic combined until after Milano Cortina 2026.
Ski mountaineering stays as an additional sport. NBC Sports reported on 25 June 2026 that the full IOC membership approved it, with organisers planning five events by adding women's and men's individual races to the 2026 three. Another report, seen only in a search summary, mentions relays as the additions instead, so the 2030 ski mountaineering events are not settled here.
Venues
The Canadian Olympic Committee lists four clusters (Haute-Savoie, Savoie, Briancon and Lyon) plus long-track speed skating in the Netherlands. In its list, Courchevel holds the alpine speed events and Val d'Isere the technical events, with ski jumping at the Tremplin du Praz (Savoie); freestyle and snowboard at Serre Chevalier and Montgenevre (Briancon); and cross-country at La Clusaz and biathlon at Le Grand-Bornand (Haute-Savoie). More is on Alpes 2030.
How the programme grew
Skiing at Chamonix in 1924, the Games later recognised as the first Olympic Winter Games, was Nordic only: cross-country, ski jumping and Nordic combined, per the ISHA timeline. Olympedia says alpine skiing arrived in 1936 with the alpine combined for women and men. Later additions, from freestyle to snowboard, are traced on alpine skiing and the Olympics and the timeline.
